The Citrus League

League History

Brief History of the Citrus League

The Citrus League arose from the ashes of the now defunct Inter-Regional League, the first attempt at a professional league that spanned across oceans and pitted teams from several different regions against each other. Though the IRL was successful in some ways and proved that their was an appetite for a league with a wider geographic footprint, it folded after 12 seasons and its members were dispersed back into regional competitions.

After a decade with no Inter-Regional Competition, the ownership groups of six regional franchises, led by the Sootopolis Skycats, agreed to band together to once again compete across regional borders. This competition, the Citrus League, and its Orange Bowl Trophy, have quickly become iconic for battling fans eager to see competition at the highest level. The Citrus League also awards the Lemon-Lime Trophy to its regular season champion, and sanctions the preseason Yuzu Cup knockout competition.

The initial lineup included six franchises spanning four regions: The Sootopolis Skycats, the Hammerlocke Bronze Wyrms, the Hammerlocke Raging Perrserkers, the Circhester Sizzle Kicks, the Celadon Cybirds, and the Canalave Dreams.

None of the six had previously competed in the IRL (nor have any subsequent expansion teams), and though the Citrus League sees itself as the successor to the IRL, we do not claim the history of that competition as our own, nor do we agree with all the philosophies of our predecessor. Controversially, the IRL was openly hostile to smaller regional leagues and teams, seeking to corner the market and monopolize viewership.

The Citrus League is directly opposed to this idea, and thus is working hard to ensure a harmonious relationship between the Citrus League, regional leagues, and grassroots competitions. To that extent, all of our franchises are required to have partnerships with local clubs and communities, and 20% of Citrus League revenue is redistributed to regional leagues. Furthermore, the Citrus League has and will continue to work with regional leagues to avoid scheduling conflicts, so fans are free to watch both local and Citrus League matches without having to choose one or the other.

Yuzu Cup

For the first time, the Citrus League introduced a preseason cup competition called the Yuzu Cup. The Yuzu Cup was a straight knockout tournament featuring seven teams (the Hammerlocke Bronze Wyrms opted not to participate), and was played under ADV Little Cup rules. Unlike in regular season play, team rosters were locked in for the duration of the tournament; moves and items could be changed, but species could not be. All rounds of the tournament will be contested as a Best-of-Three series. The Walkers were given the first round bye via random drawing. To counteract this advantage, they were required to publicly release their roster prior to the commencement of the first round. Some teams opted to compete under alternate identities for the Yuzu Cup, which are used in the bracket below.

Yuzu Cup Bracket

Round 1 Semifinals Final
Circhester Little Kicks (Sizzle Kicks) def Spikemuth Little Hooligans (Hooligans) Little Kicks def Walkers 3-Volts def Little Kicks
Accumula Walkers (Walkers) BYE

Rules and Regulations

Detailed Match Rules
-Each team will play 10 regular season games over the course of five weeks, playing one "back to back" against each other team
-All games are Best-of-1, not a series
-Standard RBY UU rules as defined on Showdown will apply
-Teams can use any six legal Pokemon in any game, with no continuity required from game to game
-Type charts and self-prepared notes are allowed, calculators are not
-No clock shall be used, but games should progress at a reasonable pace. Use common sense.

Playoff Format
-At the end of the regular season, the top 3 teams will advance to the playoffs. The #1 ranked team will receive a bye to the final. The #2 seed will play the #3 seed in the semifinal series. As a reward for earning the higher seed, the #2 will need to win just one game, while the #3 will need to win two games in order to advance to the final. The final is a single game.

Tiebreakers
-The regular season tiebreaker between two teams will be head-to-head results. If the tie is between the #2 and #3 seed, then they will finish tied and the playoff semifinal will be modified to be one game only as neither team deserves the advantage. If the tie is between other positions, the tied teams will play an extra wildcard game to determine seeding before the playoffs start. If three or more teams are tied, the tiebreaker will be standings involving only the tied teams. If three or more teams are still tied heading into the playoffs, a modified playoff format will be created and agreed upon by the owners and commissioner.
